Quilts of Valor, is a grass roots volunteer organization that began in 2003 when Catherine Roberts’ son was deployed to Iraq for a year tour. At that time she envisioned that all returning warriors should receive a quilt made with love and prayers. As of the beginning of 2014, over 97,000 quilts have been awarded to those touched by war through the Quilts of Valor Foundation www.qovf.org.
A group of 8 members of Diablo Valley Quilters decided making patriotic quilts to be distributed to returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan could augment the existing Outreach Programs already established. This group of women, who call themselves the “Valor Ladies” meet on the first Saturday of each month. Their goal is to sew two finished tops at each meeting and then finish them, individually throughout the month. Since their inception, they have sent out quilts to Walter Reed Hospital, Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA., a field hospital in Afghanistan, and have made personal presentations.
