Quilts of Valor, is a grass roots volunteer organization that began in 2003 when Catherine Roberts’ son was deployed to Iraq for a year tour.  At that time she envisioned that all returning warriors should receive a quilt made with love and prayers.   As of the mid of 2017, over 165,000 quilts have been awarded to those touched by war through the Quilts of Valor Foundation

A small group of members of Diablo Valley Quilters decided making patriotic quilts to be distributed to returning US veterans from war could augment the existing Outreach Programs already established.  This group of women, who call themselves the “Valor Ladies” meet on the first Saturday of each month.  Their goal is to sew quilt tops at each meeting and then quilt and bind them, individually throughout the month.  Since their inception, they have sent quilts to many hospitals including Walter Reed Hospital, Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA., a field hospital in Afghanistan, and have made personal presentations.
